GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT  

The annual Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology (DIFAT) will always feature a series of international competitions in order to raise awareness of how our music world has been forever impacted by new technologies.

With science and new technologies, the music industry is undergoing radical changes. Hosted by the Joseph & Loretta Law Institute of Arts and Technology at the University of Denver, the second annual Denny Awards and the 2019 International Electronic Music Competition will be held at the Newman Center for Performing Arts at the University of Denver in July 22th-August 3, 2019.

2019 Denny Awards International Electronic Music Competition be hosted by Law Institute of Arts and Technology at the University of Denver in collaboration with the University of Colorado at Denver, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China.

2019 DIFAT’s categories of Denny Awards Competition are designed to promote the use of and foster the expertise in electronic music and digitally enhanced musical creations. We endeavor to create an atmosphere of collegial, respectful and fair competition where international caliber juries judge all levels of the competitions in a blinded fashion without knowledge of the competitors’ name, professional/academic standing or institutional affiliation. DIFAT Committee has the exclusive right to appoint any and all members of the jury.

The Denny Awards competitions are open to anyone, regardless of age, nationality and affiliation. Contestants may submit in more than one category, but in all cases, only one submission is allowed for each category.

In order to establish international authority and fairness, the competition will be judged by a panel of internationally recognized professionals in the subject of electronic music, including but not limited to theatrical directors, music scholars, composers and performers from various countries.

Denny Awards for electronic music embrace all the elements of music created within the environment of ever-changing digital advancement.  The new Law Institute is a declaration that American academic institutions should begin to recognize the importance of the cyber world’s contribution to music innovation and creativity.  The Denny Awards will allow more young musicians, artists and producers to showcase their talent and skills in this evolving digitally based landscape.  In the setting of an international competition in the field of electro-acoustic music, cooperation between nations and integration of different cultures can be easily promoted.

Application Date:

Competition entry application time is from Febrary 15th, 2017 to July 05th, 2019.

Finalist names announcement:  July 20th , 2019.

Finals Competition: August 3th, 2019 at the Newman Center for Performing Arts at the University of Denver. The final competition date is pending.  Finalists will be notified by DIFAT at the appropriate date and time.

Category C: Special Achievement Awards

The Denny Awards

1.The first place winner in each category receives the prestigious Denny Award, a notable sculpture cast in bronze featuring the classic “drama mask” in Western culture caressed by the hand of Guanyin.  The winner will also receive a First Place certificate.

2.There will be two Silver Medalists and three Bronze Medalists in each category.  Each will receive the corresponding Certificates of recognition.

3.All other Finalists will receive certificates of Honorable Mention.

4.If appropriate, all winners will perform at the concert for Electro-acoustic music that formally ends the competition at the DIFAT.

5.The Judges Committee has the uncontestable right to not grant awards in any category should it deem necessary at its sole discretion.

6.The Festival also reserves the right to make the winners’ work into a concert work suitable for commercial use as a video or music recording.  Finally, the winner’s artistic work product, if applicable, will be announced and displayed on or linked to the Festival’s website as a permanent record of accomplishment.

7.All award winners will be permanently recorded and displayed at the DIFAT website at, www.difat.com, www.difat.cn . At the sole discretion of DIFAT, the Finals of our competitions may be live-streamed online to the United States, China and all other applicable countries, subjected to rules and regulations of those countries.

Notifications

Fifteen Finalists in each category will be notified by June 20st, 2019 and these Finalists will be invited to attend the Finals Competition at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology 2019 at their own expense and volition.  Non-American participants will receive a formal letter of invitation to facilitate their visa application.

Judges 

A panel of five internationally appointed judges will adjudicate the works at the Denny Award Finals.  The Festival reserves the sole right to appoint judges in its sole discretion.  The contestants will be presented to the panel of judges anonymously (ie. the finalists’ name, country of origin and associated institution will be kept anonymous).  The results of the Finals competition shall be announced within 20 minutes of the actual competition in the presence of all judges.  The results of the DIFAT’s judges are final and shall not be contested.

General Information

The stated mission of the Joseph & Loretta Law Institute of Arts and Technology as well as the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology is to promote the advancement of creative expression through arts and science and also to cultivate new audiences.  For this reason, works that impact the emotion of the judges and the audience will be granted preference.

All works submitted for competition must be an original creation not longer than 7 minutes. There shall be no Application Fee for submittal of works for competition.  Each contestant is limited to only one submittal in any category.

for preliminary round adjudication. Committee will send back the confirmation notice letter to you before deadline, July 05th ,2019.

For all Denny Awards competitions, finalists will be selected from earlier rounds and notified by June 20h, 2019.  These finalists will receive invitations to the Finals, to be held at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology in late July 2019 (final dates pending).  Please take note that certain categories of competition do NOT require the personal appearance of the contestant.  Appearance at the Finals is the responsibility of the Finalist although DIFAT shall issue official letters of invitation for Finalists coming from outside the United States to get a visiting visa from the U.S. Consulate.  At the Finals, the scores will be tabulated once the competition is completed and announced on site. ¬¬The jury’s decision is solely at their discretion and shall not be contested.

The Finals at the 2019 Denny Awards International Electronic Music Competition

The Finals of all the categories of the Denny Awards competitions hosted by the Law Institute will be held during the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology 2019 (July 22th – August 17th, 2019). Please check websites, www.difat.com, www.difat.cn ,or go to the link at www.du.edu/liat after June 20th, 2019 for finalized competition dates, times and location for the Finals of all competitions at the Festival.

2019 DENNY AWARDS COMPETITION CATEGORY

Category A. ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC MUSIC COMPOSITION

Group I.  Electro-Acoustic Music Composition

In this category, contestants will submit an original music composition not longer than 7 minutes that must be an original electro-acoustic composition, utilizing electronic and/or electronically modified acoustic resources, not commercially published.

Group 2.  Electro-Acoustic Music Composition for Video/Film

This category is akin to electronic music composition for film, television or electronic games. Each segment of video and music submitted for composition must be less than 7minutes.  

A viedo file need to reedited by competitor, the music with the picture must be original score by the competitor. The contestant shall compose electro-accoustic music to synchronize to the provided video for the best cinematic effect.  

Group 3.  Electro-Acoustic Music Recording & Mixing

This competition category tests the contestants’ ability to maximize the quality of recorded sound and music post-production manipulation in order to obtain the highest satisfaction from the listener. All contestants will submit their composition in a 16bit 44.1KHz wav. file, up to 7 minutes in length, to the following address_dennyawards@vip.163.com by June 20th, 2019.

a) Competition for Recording --- open to all contestants who will submit musical works that contestant has demonstrated credit for musical recording. Contestants can submitted a work that is in a format of a CD or DVD, but credit authenticity must be shown by published credit in the form of album cover or printed program or the like.

b)  Competition for Mixing --- only open to contestant s that are still enrolled in educational   institutions. Committee will send the uniform audio files what contestants need to mix to their email address. Contestants must perform mixing ONLY in waves 9.0 version in Cubase, Logic or Protools platforms. Finalists will be invited to attend DIFAT and compete on location in late July 2019.

Group 4.  Competition for Electronic/Intelligent Dance Music (EDM/IDM) Composition

The submission needs to show innovation and creativity of EDM/IDM music.  Style of composition is not limited, such as music by AFX/Aphex Twin, Mouse on Mars, Autechre, Squarepusher, etc.  The composition should avoid traditional acoustic instrument sounds and employ arrangement of electronically synthesized sounds and presented to DIFAT as a stereo digital audio file.

All contestants will submit their composition in a16bit 44.1KHz wav. file, up to 7 minutes in length, to the following address dennyawards@vip.163.com by May 31th, 2019.  Audio files should be in16bit 44.1KHz wav format.  Fifteen finalists will be selected for direct competition in front of the Finals Judging Panel at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology 2019.

Category B . ELECTRONIC MUSIC PERFORMANCE

Group 1. Competition for Newly Invented Electro-Acoustic Musical Instruments

This category of the Denny Award applies to current inventions and development of new types of electronic or digitally enhanced musical instruments.

For the purposes of this competition, “new instrument” shall be defined as musical instruments that make music and sound that is not commercially available in traditional retail stores or online sales.  The instrument must not be solely acoustical and must contain partial electronic component to its sound and music creation.

General Considerations:

1) All musical instruments requiring an electronic or digital component to emit sound are eligible.

2) An ensemble of players/instruments is eligible as one entry.

3) Instruments emitting sound and music without a human operator are not allowed.

Group 2.Live Set EDM/IDM Electronic Performance (SOLO or Ensemble)

In this competition, as an extension of the EDM/IDM category, contestants as a soloist or soloist with ensemble (as with singer, traditional instrumentalists, etc), will submit a pre-screening video of a live EDM/IDM based performance using laptop and/or electronic instruments/synthesizers. All performers are permitted to use MIDI controller, synthesizer,FX unit to assist for mixing sound or performance.

A high degree of improvisation and constant active interaction between performer and the electronic instruments are strongly encouraged.  The performance should be less than 7 minutes. All submissions should be in the form of a digital video file, H.264 1080p ,16bit 44.1KHz. mp4.

Jury will consists of five international judges chosen at the sole discretion of the Festival Committee.  Score will be based on 1) Stage performance (30%); 2) Improvisation (20%) ; Arrangement(20%); Improvisation and Creativity (30%)

For the fifteen Finalists chosen to compete at the DIFAT Finals, each Finalist will be given a 4-hour window to set up their equipment on a 72 by 30 inch table, which will be carried on stage for the performance.  Contestants shall provide their own headphone monitoring.

For the performance, inputs to the house system will be available as 2 channel stereo ¼” phone jacks, XLRF jacks, or female RCA.  Only one of these stereo pairs may be used and no equipment will be supplied by DIFAT.

At the Finals, each contestant’s table will provide a single American standard NEMA 5-15 3 prong AC electrical outlet.  All international power adapters or transformers needed by the contestants for the proper execution of their performances must be provided by the contestants. Thirty minutes before the contestant’s scheduled performance, the equipment on the table must be powered down and will then be connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).  

Category C.  The Annual Denny Awards for Special Achievement

These awards will be presented annually to honor and celebrate the contribution of certain individuals to the world of electronic music and digitally enhanced music.  

The Denny Awards for Special Achievement will be granted in the following categories in 2019:

1) Lifetime Achievement in the field of electronic or digitally enhanced music.

2) Special Technical Achievement for electronic or digitally enhanced music.

3) Special Performance Achievement in the field of electronic or digitally enhanced music.

4) Special Achievement in Education of electronic or digitally enhanced music.

The Special Achievement Award recipients are selected at the sole discretion of the Awards Committee of DIFAT.  The Festival reserves the sole right to add, delete or change Award categories.

All Category contestants will need to send Addio amd video files to committee at dennyawards@vip.163.com.

If contestant wants to submit actual digital files to participate rather than using files online, you can submit files in form of data CD , DVD or USB Flash Drive, and mail them to Committee at the address found below under Contacts. Deadline of application is July 05th,2019.

The Denny Awards Competition Organizing Committee holds the priority rights to give performance of the winning works, publish them in CDs, and promote them on Denny Awards International Electronic Music Competition official website.

The award winners hold the authorship right and the rights to arrange performances and publishing for the winning compositions after the award.

To ensure fairness in the competition, any entry that involves plagiarism will be immediately subject to disqualification.
