2019 Denny Awards Competition

                                                 THE DENNY AWARDS FOR ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC MUSIC COMPETITIONS

The annual Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology (DIFAT) will always feature a series of international competitions in order to raise awareness of how our music world has been forever impacted by new technologies.

DIFAT’s categories of competition are designed to promote the use of and foster the expertise in electronic music and digitally enhanced musical creations.  We endeavor to create an atmosphere of collegial, respectful and fair competition where international caliber juries judge all levels of the competitions in a blinded fashion without knowledge of the competitors’ name, professional/academic standing or institutional affiliation.  DIFAT has the exclusive right to appoint any and all members of the jury.

The competitions are open to anyone, regardless of age, nationality and affiliation.  Contestants may submit in more than one category, but in all cases, only one submission is allowed for each category.

For all competitions, finalists will be selected from earlier rounds and notified by June 23rd, 2019.  These finalists will receive invitations to the Finals, to be held at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology from July 29th to August 3rd, 2019.  Please take note that certain categories of competition do NOT require the personal appearance of the contestant.  Appearance at the Finals is the responsibility of the Finalist although DIFAT shall issue official letters of invitation for Finalists coming from outside the United States to get a visiting visa from the U.S. Consulate.  For Asian Finalists that cannot come to Denver for any reason, provisions will be made to produce a professional video and audio file at a site to be determined in Beijing and such files will be sent to DIFAT to be adjudicated y the judging panel.  At the Finals, the scores will be tabulated once the competition is completed and announced on site.  The jury’s decision is solely at their discretion and shall not be contested.

At any time before or after the DIFAT competition, if any work submitted is found not to meet the qualifications of the stated rules of the competition, DIFAT shall execute its indisputable authority to disqualify the submitted work or its prize, if awarded.

The Finals at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology (DIFAT)

The Finals of all the categories of the international competitions hosted by the Law Institute will be held during the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology 2019 (July 29th – August 2nd, 2019).  Please check websiteswww.difat.com,www.difat.cnor go to the link atwww.du.edu/liatafter May 15th, 2019 for finalized competition dates, times and location for the Finals of all competitions at the Festival.

All Gold Medal first place winners will perform at the concert, “Electro-acoustic Music Madness”, during DIFAT 2019.  Other winners can also be invited at the sole discretion of the DIFAT Program Committee.  This concert shall be video and audio recorded for commercial distribution.  By agreeing to compete and/or perform, all participants shall grant DIFAT the sole right to these recordings and the commercial distribution of such recordings.

THE DENNY AWARDS


A.  ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC MUSIC COMPOSITION/PRODUCTION

A1.  Electro-Acoustic Music Composition

In this category, contestants will submit an original music composition not longer than 6 minutes that must be an original electro-acoustic composition, utilizing electronic and/or electronically modified acoustic resources, not commercially published or awarded a prize in any other competition.  The digital files of this music will be sent to the following address,dennyaward@vip.163.com, for preliminary round adjudication.  Deadline for submittal is May 31st, 2019.

A2. Electro-Acoustic Music Composition for Video/Film

This category is akin to electronic music composition for film, television or electronic games.  Each segment of video and music submitted for composition must be less than 6 minutes.  Submitted works must be an original electro-acoustic composition, utilizing electronic and/or electronically modified acoustic resources, not commercially published or awarded a prize in any other competition.  A video file can be downloaded from web address,www.DIFAT.comorwww.DIFAT.cnafter March 15th, 2009.  The contestant shall compose electro-acoustic music to synchronize to the provided video for the best cinematic effect.   The digital files of this music matched to video will be sent to the following address,dennyaward@vip.163.com, for preliminary round adjudication.  Deadline for submittal is May 31st, 2019.

A3.Electro-Acoustic Music Recording & Mixing (2 Classes of Awards)

This competition category tests the contestants’ ability to maximize the quality of recorded sound and music post-production manipulation in order to obtain the highest satisfaction from the listener.

A3-1. Competition for Recording --- open to all contestants who will submit musical works that contestant has demonstrated credit for musical recording.  Contestants can submitted a work that is in a format of a CD or DVD, but credit authenticity must be shown by published credit in the form of album cover or printed program or the like. .

A3-2. Competition for Mixing --- only open to contestants that are still enrolled in educational institutions.  Registered contestants will access recorded audio files (wav files) from the DIFAT web sites (www.DIFAT.comandwww.DIFAT.cn) and submit their mixing work product online for the first round of the competition.  Contestants must perform mixing ONLY in waves 9.0 version in Cubase, Logic or Protools platforms.

A4..  Competition for Electronic/Intelligent Dance Music (EDM/IDM) Composition

The submission must be an original ALL electronic composition, not commercially published or awarded a prize in any other competition.  The submission does not need to adhere to a steady beat, but should be music related to current IDM genres such as music by AFX/Aphex Twin, Mouse on Mars, Autechre, Squarepusher, etc.  The composition should avoid traditional acoustic instrument sounds and employ original electronically synthesized sounds and presented to DIFAT as a stereo digital audio file.

All contestants will submit their composition in a 16bit 48Hz wav. file, up to 6 minutes in length, to the following address,dennyaward@vip.163.comby May 31st, 2018.  Audio files should be in 16bit 48Hz wav format.  Fifteen finalists will be selected for direct competition in front of the Finals Judging Panel at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology 2019.


B.  ELECTRONIC PEROFRMANCE

B1.  Competition for Newly Invented Electro-Acoustic Musical Instruments



This category of the Denny Award applies to current inventions and development of new types of electronic or digitally enhanced musical instruments.

For the purposes of this competition, “new instrument” shall be defined as musical instruments that make music and sound that is not commercially available by traditional retail sales.  The instrument must not be solely acoustical and must contain partial electronic component to its sound and music creation.  

General Considerations:

1)All musical instruments requiring an electronic or digital component to emit sound are eligible.

2)An ensemble of players/instruments is eligible as one entry.

3)Instruments emitting sound and music without a human operator are not allowed.

4)Contestants should register according to instructions below by e-mailing name and personal information to dennyawards@vip.163.com.  Materials submitted for first round adjudication should be received at same e-mail address by May 31st, 2019 and should consist of videos of both an explanation of the instrument and a performance with this instrument not to exceed five minutes.

B2..  Competition for Live Set EDM/IDM Electronic Performance, SOLO

In this competition, as an extension of the EDM/IDM category, contestants as a SOLOIST, will submit a pre-screening video of a live EDM/IDM based performance using laptop and/or electronic instruments/synthesizers.  All compositions must be 100% original material rather than a sequencing of pre-existing recordings or a collage of pre-recorded musical elements.  Audio loops are permitted but the looping technique and processing must add significant development to the music via creative techniques such as modulation of loop/start end points, scrubbing, granular techniques, etc.  A high degree of improvisation and constant active interaction between performer and the electronic instruments are strongly encouraged.

The performance should be less than 6 minutes.  All submissions should be in the form of a digital video file, H.264 1080p,16bit 48Hz. mp4.

For the fifteen Finalists chosen to compete at the DIFAT Finals, each Finalist will be given a 4 hour window to set up their equipment on a 72 by 30 inch table, which will be carried on stage for the performance.  Contestants will compete and perform live for the judges at the Finals.  The video to be submitted for preliminary competition should be sent todennyaward@vip.163.comby May 31st, 2019.  Fifteen Finalists shall be selected and announced.

General Considerations for all Denny Award Competitions


1) Fifteen Finalists in each category will be notified by June 23rd, 2019 and these Finalists will be invited to attend the Finals Competition at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology 2019 at their own expense and volition.  Non-American participants will receive a formal letter of invitation to facilitate their visa application; those not able to attend in the U.S. will be notified to perform at a location in Beijing where a professional quality video and audio file will be created in order compete at the DIFAT Finals in Denver.

2) There shall be no Application Fee for submittal of works for competitions.  Each contestant is limited to only one submittal in any category.

3) Theme of the Competition:  The stated mission of the Joseph & Loretta Law Institute of Arts and Technology as well as the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology is to promote the advancement of creative expression through arts and science and also to cultivate new audiences.  For this reason, works that impact the emotion of the judges and the audience will be granted preference.

4) Judges:  A panel of five internationally appointed judges will adjudicate the works at the Denny Award Finals.  The Festival reserves the sole right to appoint judges in its sole discretion.  The contestants will be presented to the panel of judges anonymously (ie. the finalists’ name, country of origin and associated institution will be kept anonymous).  The results of the Finals competition shall be announced within 20 minutes of the actual competition in the presence of all judges.

5) Awards:  All Finalists will be awarded Certificates of Gold, Silver, or Bronze Medal and Honorable Mention.  There shall be only one Gold Medalist (that shall be awarded the Denny), two Silver Medalists, and three Bronze Medalists.  The Judges Committee has the uncontestable right to not grant awards in any category should it deem necessary at its sole discretion.  Gold and Silver Medalists may win the right to be exhibited in Concert during the Festival.  The Festival also reserves the right to make the winners’ work into a concert work suitable for commercial use as a video or music recording.  Finally, the winner’s artistic work product, if applicable, will be announced and displayed on or linked to the Festival’s website as a permanent record of accomplishment.  In addition, all award winners will be permanently recorded and displayed at the DIFAT website atwww.DIFAT.comandwww.DIFAT.cn.  At the sole discretion of DIFAT, the Finals of our competitions may be live-streamed online to the United States, China and all other applicable countries, subjected to rules and regulations of those countries.

C.  DENNY AWARDS FOR SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT

These awards will be presented annually to honor and celebrate the contribution of certain individuals to the world of electro-acoustic music and digitally enhanced music.

The Denny Awards for Special Achievement will be granted in the following categories in 2019:

1)Lifetime Achievement in the field of electronic or digitally enhanced music.

2)Special Technical Achievement for electronic or digitally enhanced music.

3)Special Performance Achievement in the field of electronic or digitally enhanced music.

4)Special Achievement in Education of electronic or digitally enhanced music.

The Special Achievement Award recipients are selected at the sole discretion of the Awards Committee of DIFAT.  The Festival reserves the sole right to add, delete or change Award categories.
